Our faith teaches us to love our neighbor by advocating for access to basic health care for all and to participate vigorously and responsibly in the public discussion on how best to fulfill this obligation. Unfortunately, current proposals in Congress that are aimed at making our health care system sustainable would attempt to do so at the expense of our most vulnerable community members.

Thank you for your tireless commitment to providing health care for the most vulnerable. As a person of faith, I am writing today to urge you to continue to actively oppose cutting, capping or restructuring Medicaid as it presently is being proposed in Washington.  I am compelled to advocate for heath care for all Americans because my faith guides me in decision-making.

Beyond my theological commitments, I want to share with you the results of a recent survey, conducted by Brunswick Partners.  Their work found 75 percent of Americans agree that the proposed changes to Medicaid in the AHCA are a bad idea.

These results are significant because they find majorities of Americans identifying as conservatives (55 percent), moderates (82 percent) and liberals (90 percent) are opposed to the AHCA's Medicaid provisions.  Further, the survey finds that 70 percent of Americans believe that Medicaid has been good for the country (65 percent of conservatives, 68 percent of moderates and 81 percent of liberals). While 74 percent of Americans believe that cutting Medicaid funding should NOT be a top priority for Congress in 2017 (62 percent of conservatives, 79 percent of moderates and 82 percent of liberals). 
 
Lutheran and Episcopalian in New Jersey (and the majority throughout the US) support the preserving of benefits for the most vulnerable Americans. We cannot not allow 14 million Americans to become uninsured even if there is a potential to reduce Medicaid spending.  And we know that this will be disastrous for New Jersey because Medicaid provides those struggling with addiction life saving treatment options.

Medicaid also provides care for Seniors living in nursing homes, children, and persons with disabilities.  Even more strongly, this survey conducted by Brunswick Partners agree:
 77 percent of Americans believe that seniors in nursing homes or those who receive home care should be able to keep Medicaid benefits (74 percent of conservatives, 75 percent of moderates and 86 percent of liberals);
 85 percent of Americans believe that people with disabilities should be able to keep Medicaid benefits (83 percent of conservatives, 83 percent of moderates and 89 percent of liberals); and
 80 percent of Americans believe that children should be able to keep Medicaid benefits (78 percent of conservatives, 77 percent of moderates and 87 percent of liberals).

Please share this information with your colleagues.  Make sure they understand that constituents across the political spectrum, and people of faith support health care for all! I urge you put your energy toward improving on the successes of the Affordable Care Act.
 
 
*The survey was administered online between May 30 and June 5, 2017 among a national representative sample consisting of 1,000 US respondents, 18 years of age and over. The data were weighted to targets based on census/industry accepted data, such as age, gender, region and ethnicity. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.10 percentage points at 95 percent level of confidence.
