Over the last year we asked you to
take action to encourage your members of Congress to support the Global Food
Security Reauthorization Act. Thanks in part to your advocacy, and the actions
hundreds of Lutherans took, Congress has responded. I am excited to inform you
that the Global Food Security Reauthorization Act passed in both the House and
Senate unanimously.
The Global Food Security
Reauthorization Act will extend Congressional authorization to Feed the Future,
a U.S. government initiative charged with combating chronic hunger and food
insecurity around the world. Feed the Future ensures that every dollar spent
accrues value in global productivity, expands opportunities for education,
reduces violence, and helps those who suffer from food scarcity and poverty. Through
Feed the Future, participating countries have been able to increase
agricultural and nutritional investments. As a result, farmers can feed their
families, communities, and contribute to their countries’ economic growth.
Globally, 815 million people suffer from chronic hunger, the majority of
whom are women. Approximately 45 percent of deaths of children under the age of
five are caused by malnutrition.
We are grateful for the bipartisan support and leadership shown by members
of both parties to ensure passage of this important legislation. The bipartisan
bill now goes to the President for signature—at which point it will become law.
Thank you for taking action in support of this critical legislation. Your
voice and engagement make a tremendous difference.
Blessings,
Patricia Kisare
