Next week, the Senate will review a proposed budget that
will influence the U.S. government’s treatment of immigrants in the U.S. and
how the government addresses the root causes of migration.
Senators will be making important decisions about how money
is allocated for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Department
of State (DOS) for Fiscal Year 2019. Allocations for both agencies in the
current fiscal year are concerning: DHS is receiving
more funds to add hundreds of
detention beds to imprison over 40,000 immigrants. In addition, DOS received
funding to address the root causes of migration, which alarmingly also includes
money for military training of forces known to have committed human
rights violations.
The
Senate has the opportunity next week to make changes and create a system that
better respects the God-given dignity of all people. As the past few weeks have
shown, the actions of DHS and DOS have directly impacted the lives of children
and families who escape conflict in their own countries and make their way to
the U.S. Budgets are moral documents that reflect the values of a country. Urge
your Senators to make budget decisions that stand for the safety and protection
of the most vulnerable among us.
