URGENT: Senate leaders plan to vote today on a procedural vote known as a “motion to proceed,” which then allows them to take up legislation that would make it harder for millions of Americans to access affordable health care. Please call your Senators now and tell them to improve access to health care; don’t tear it apart. Your voice makes a difference!

“We of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America have an enduring commitment to work for and support health care for all people as a shared endeavor. Our commitment comes in grateful response to God’s saving love in Jesus Christ that frees us to love and seek the well-being of our neighbor.”

– ELCA social statement, “Caring for Health: Our Shared Endeavor (2003).”

In a nation of great abundance, everyone should have access to quality and affordable health care, no matter our income, gender or background. Unfortunately, current legislation in Congress would make it harder for millions of Americans to access affordable health care. All of the legislation drafted so far was crafted behind closed doors and makes deep cuts to Medicaid--essential healthcare for seniors, veterans, children and working families.  Sadly, the proposals increase costs for those who can least afford it.  Without our voices, Senators on both sides of the aisle would not stand up against these terrible proposals, which, as drafted, would cut coverage for at least 22 million people. We must continue making our voices heard.

One of the most effective ways to help save health care for millions of Americans is by calling your senators and urging them to oppose the Better Care Reconciliation Act. Here’s how:

  1. Find the names of your senators. (Visit the official Senate website to look them up).
  2. Dial the U.S. Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121 and ask to be connected with your senator’s office.
  3. Once you reach the office, introduce yourself and be prepared to provide your zip code.
