Partners: AMMPARO (Accompanying Migrant Minors with Protection, Advocacy, Representation and Opportunities), and local congregations and organizations
Capital: Washington, D.C.
Population: 323 million
Interesting fact: Over 350 languages are spoken in the United States.
Did you know? In 2016, 12.7 percent of Americans were living in poverty. This is down from 13.5 percent in 2015, but still higher than before the Great Recession.
Every minute, nearly 20 people around the world are forcibly displaced from their homes due to violence, poverty or persecution, according to the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees. Some are families seeking safety, parents desperate for a way to feed and support their children, or unaccompanied children and youth with nowhere else to turn. Many flee to the United States from nearby Mexico or Central America.
Once the difficult journey to the U.S. ends, many migrant children, youth and families face new challenges, including a complex immigration system, limited employment opportunities and little assistance. But with the right aid and protection, many are able to support themselves, care for their families in safety and contribute to their new communities.
Through ELCA World Hunger and the ELCA's AMMPARO strategy, our church is walking with them toward this hopeful future.
Response + Impact
Your gifts to ELCA World Hunger help congregations and community organizations provide food, clothing and care to new neighbors, meeting their immediate needs.
And through advocacy, legal representation and jobs, and housing and education programs, this church is helping ensure our neighbors can meet their needs tomorrow.
Working alongside our companion churches and partner organizations in Central America and Mexico, we're also addressing the root causes of migration and providing new opportunities to children, youth and families seeking security and stability.
Your gifts help make possible this collaborative work within the ELCA and with key national and regional partners.
Together, we are called by our faith to advocate for basic human rights and safety for our neighbors.
You can play a part in ensuring a safe and stable home for children, youth and families migrating to the U.S. - and address the root causes of migration - by supporting ELCA World Hunger today.
Your gifts will support these life-saving, life-changing programs of ELCA World Hunger in 2018. If funds raised for a specific program exceed the goal, the funds will be used to address a similar need in that country or region.
