SB 882: CalFresh Simpler for Seniors

On June 9, 2020, the Senate Appropriations Committee will hear SB 882: CalFresh Simpler for Seniors. This bill simplifies the CalFresh application and retention processes for seniors and people with disabilities. This bill passed unanimously out of the Senate Human Services Committee last week.

California has one of the lowest rates of CalFresh uptake--19%--among seniors who are eligible for the program. The complex and overly burdensome application and reporting processes contribute to low CalFresh enrollment among older adults. COVID-19 has placed an added burden on seniors as their income and retirement sources may have lost value, and as they are more vulnerable to the disease.

The Appropriations Committee considers bills for their cost in relation to other projects and the budget as a whole. With the state's wallet tight given the pandemic-induced recession, advocacy is essential in getting this bill passed.
