URGENT: Tell Lawmakers Prioritize Our Health Over Profits for Polluters

Support Veto of House Bill 1100

Now is the time to work together to protect our health AND our economy

The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it."  Psalm 24: 1 (NRSV)

As Christians, we believe we are called to steward all that is the Lord's. That means prayerful daily choices -- living lightly so that our neighbors may have enough to thrive, and paying attention to how we treat the rest of creation. It also means using our public voice to curb practices harmful to our common home.

Though our faith has always taught us that our lives and all of creation are intertwined, today it is possibly clearer to the world than ever before.  Just as a virus respects no borders, neither do the air and water pollution related to the use of fossil fuels. From micro-plastics infecting the bottom of the food chain to greenhouse gases changing our climate, we see the approaching disaster.

Has there ever been a time when it has been more obvious that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure?

Please act now to stop legislation that could cost much, much more than the hundreds of millions in potential tax breaks for the expansion of petrochemical and natural gas industries in Pennsylvania. Urge your state lawmakers to uphold Gov. Wolf's veto of House Bill 1100 for the sake of the neighbors we are called to love -- for now and for generations to come.

Dear [Decision Maker],

This winter, the General Assembly sent House Bill 1100, legislation that would give a massive tax break to the natural gas and petrochemical industries, to the governor for his signature. Fortunately, Gov. Wolf vetoed the bill.

There's never a good time to give hundreds of millions of dollars to prop up pollution, but it's hard to imagine a worse place to divert tax dollars at this time when the need to invest in our common good -- sustainable livelihoods and a healthy common home -- is so clear. The contrast between what we need and what this bill does is stark.

With prayers for your health and wisdom in discernment, I urge you to abandon HB1100 and commit us to a healthier vision for our shared future.

Sincerely,
