Co-sponsor Runaway Youth bill draft

As a person of faith and your constituent, I ask for your support of a bill draft that help some of our most vulnerable members of society.  Youth who run away often choose to go without shelter rather than return to an unsafe home setting.

This bill draft would "extend from 12 to 72 hours the time after a child runaway's arrival that a foster home, group home, or shelter must notify the agency responsible for providing child welfare services of the child's presence in the home or shelter.  Under the bill, an intake worker must only notify the parent, guardian, or legal custodian of the child if it is in the best interest of the child."

The sorts of protections in this bill could give a traumatized youth more space to feel safe.  Not having time to spend in a safe shelter is a major problem youth under 18 experience.  Also, the bill gives professionals working with youth the ability to better take the youth's home life into consideration.  That includes "if it is in the child's best interest, no later than six hours after the child arrives, the home or shelter must notify the parent, guardian, and legal custodian of the child's
presence."
