About the Jerusalem and the West Bank Country Program

YAGM volunteers in the Jerusalem and the West Bank (JWB) program accompany the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land (ELCJHL), an Arabic-speaking Palestinian Lutheran church of six congregations in Jerusalem, the West Bank and Jordan that serves its local communities with vital educational and social ministries. JWB YAGM volunteers serve primarily in the educational ministries of the ELCJHL, working with English classes at K-12 schools; offering communications support to a university, an education office, a church office or the Environmental Education Center; and connecting with local ELCJHL pastors and congregations. The JWB program offers YAGM volunteers the chance to live and serve in an interfaith context, to explore the Christian call to justice and peacemaking in a challenging political environment, and to explore the land of the Bible through the “living stones” of the people who call it home.

Upon returning home from service in Jerusalem and the West Bank, YAGM volunteers are often able to help others better understand the area’s social context. This relational aspect of the program can be as important as the work we do. The program fosters friendships, builds bridges across communities and improves cross-cultural understanding.
