About the YAGM Madagascar Country Program

Madagascar is a land of beauty and cultural diversity. Often called “the eighth continent,” it offers plant and animal life that can be found nowhere else. The people, descended from African and Austronesian ancestors, speak both French and Malagasy, which is most closely related to Indonesian languages. Madagascar is also a country that is rising to many challenges, including a high poverty rate, limited infrastructure and the realities of environmental degradation.

The Malagasy Lutheran Church (Fiangonana Loterana Malagasy) is one of the largest Lutheran churches in the world, with a membership of almost 4 million. We partner with the FLM on many programs, including the Women’s Vocational Training Center, Lutheran Graduate School of Theology, Bible schools, Project Shalom (an integrated ministry among Muslim communities), Lutheran High School or Primary School, Lutheran University, Lutheran Community Center, Revival Movement Healing Center, Lutheran Environmental Department, SALFA (Lutheran hospitals, dispensaries and clinics), schools for blind and deaf children, and English clubs and after-school programs.

People in Madagascar are greatly interested in learning English, and every YAGM volunteer serving in Madagascar will have an opportunity to teach English either formally or informally. Volunteers may work in a school, a hospital or an agricultural setting, but no matter the placement, teaching English will be part of the workload.
