"And taking the five loaves and the two fish, [Jesus] looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd. And all ate and were filled. What was left over was gathered up, twelve baskets of broken pieces" (Luke 9:16-17).
FEEDING OUR NEIGHBORS
New Light has been feeding hungry families in our community since well before the pandemic. We partnered with a local school to send backpacks home with food for the weekends in addition to supporting the local food pantry and homeless shelter. And then, the pandemic began. The need grew. School went online, and families started to struggle as the world responded to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. The school told us that they could no longer get the bags to the students. But, we said we could deliver them if they would share addresses. As we began delivering we quickly realized a weekend of food for one person was not coming anywhere close to responding to the needs of these families. Some of the homes we would deliver to had 5 and 6 children and sometimes extra adults too.
We began creating family boxes. Within the boxes we included food for simple family meals, making sure protein and vegetables and other healthy food were included. We also started providing household items, laundry detergent pods, cleaning supplies, paper towels and toilet paper. We delivered these boxes along with the backpacks to the names and addresses the school provided, weekly between 10-15 families. We prayed and said we would continue to do this for as long as was needed or until the donations and finances were not there anymore.
By God’s grace and the generosity of a congregation as well as passionate and dedicated volunteers, here we are more than a year later and we still deliver once a week. We also were able to provide Christmas gifts for every member of the families, Easter dinners, Thanksgiving dinners, and are currently putting together summer kick off boxes.
Even with the generous gifts of the congregation, we are just at the halfway point of 2021 and running low on funds. You can help this important work to continue by giving a gift and for a short time- it will be matched through the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America's (ELCA) ongoing response to hunger with a Daily Bread Matching Grant.
We need your help to make sure we generate the maximum amount of support! ELCA World Hunger is supporting our fundraiser with a $500 matching grant. With your help, we hope we can raise $500 or more to match the grant from ELCA World Hunger. We have until Sunday, June 20th to meet our goal. Every gift truly makes a difference — thank you for your support!
