Welcome to Charlie's Personal Page
Hello friends and family,
*Update: My placement site will be in the community of Foundiougne, Senegal. Foundiougne is located along the Sine-Saloum River delta in central Senegal, and is one of the sites where the Lutheran Church of Senegal's Department of Community Development works. I will be working with the Department of Community Development (DDC) in Foundiougne. The DDC focuses on nutrition and agricultural development, environmental education, and differently-abled rights.
Good news! If you found this page, that means you are interested in supporting my call to serve as a volunteer for the ELCAs Young Adults in Global Mission (YAGM) program.
I am beyond excited to share that I accepted the opportunity to serve as a YAGM volunteer in Senegal starting in August. I will be one of more than 70 young adults serving on behalf of the ELCA in 11 different country programs around the world!
It costs about $15,000 to send one volunteer. The ECLA generoulsy covers $10,000 of this. However, I am commited to raise the remaining $5,000. And I believe we can exceed this amount!
You can help me reach my goal by supporting my fundraising efforts with a donation today. By doing so, we are joined together in this incredible journey. Not only will I grow in my own faith and walk in accompaniment with a host community, but I hope you will be moved too. I am thrilled to think about the ways in which this year will form me and continue to provide learning experiences.
Thank you so much for joining me and for your support. Every gift truly matters! Let's do this!
Why do I want to be a YAGM Volunteer?
- The opportunity to recconect with my Lutheran faith in a global community of believers
- To share my gifts and grow with my host community
- Expand the definition of "missionary", recognizing the historical connotation of the word and how the ELCA reconciles with it
- Foster cultural exchange with my host community and continue to share their story post-YAGM
A little about me!
- Recent grad of Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo with a BA in History
- Afraid of spiders, eek! (not sure how big they are in Senegal!)
- Favrorite things to do are read, yoga, and grab a coffee with friends
Fun facts about Senegal!

- Wresteling is the national sport
- Ngalax (ngalakh) is a popular dish served on Good Friday, shared between Christian and Muslim collegues
What is Young Adults in Global Mission?
The ELCA’s Young Adults in Global Mission program provides young adults, ages 21-29, the opportunity to grow in their faith and work in partnership with our global companions. Young adults in the program serve in churches, schools and social service ministries. Currently the program is engaged in work in Argentina/Uruguay, Australia, Cambodia, Central Europe, Jerusalem/West Bank, Madagascar, Mexico, Rwanda, Senegal, Southern Africa and the United Kingdom.
The total cost for one young adult in the program is $15,000. Each young adult is tasked with raising a minimum of $5,000 of this to help support their year of service. If more than $5,000 in gifts is received, the additional funds will be help to support other young adult volunteers and ensure that there is a sustainable source of revenue for future the Young Adults in Global Mission program.
