Accompaniment: Help Support John Christensen | YAGM '22-'23
After being in the application process for nearly two-and-a-half years, I am proud to say that I have finally been accepted into the ELCA's Young Adults in Global Mission program, and placed in the United Kingdom, to work with partner organization, Time for God starting this coming September.
For anyone who doesn't know Young Adults in Global Mission think of it Fulbright Scholarship for Lutherans meets PeaceCorp*. I will be one of more than ~30 young adults serving on behalf of the ELCA in 4 different country programs around the world. The program in the United Kingdom is unique though, in the fact that we will be working with Time for God, who will also bring in young adults from all across the UK, and the world -- an opportunity to deepen connections with our new local community, AND the larger world.
With the call to this ministry, we are asked to raise at least $5,000 of the ~$15,000 it takes to support a YAGM in their year of service, with the ELCA committed to raising the rest. I am hoping to raise $7,500 to go toward, not only offsetting the costs of supporting myself and the rest of this year's YAGM but supporting the future of this ministry. Through your donation, you join me on this journey as I grow in my own faith and understanding, walk in partnership with our global companions, AND support the continuation of this program and the opportunity for someone else to come next in this work.
As a thank you for your generous support, I will be putting together a blog/e-newsletter regularly, giving my personal insight into what it means to do God's work with my hands and to live deeply into the new communit(ies) into which I am placed.

*About Young Adults in Global Mission
The ELCA’s Young Adults in Global Mission program provides young adults, ages 21-29, the opportunity to grow in their faith and work in partnership with our global companions. Young adults in the program serve in churches, schools, and social service ministries. For the coming service year, the program is engaged in work in Argentina and Uruguay, Jerusalem and the West Bank, Senegal, and the United Kingdom, though in the past volunteers have also gone to Australia, Central Europe (Hungary and Serbia), Madagascar, Mexico, Nepal, and Rwanda.
The total cost for one young adult in the program is $15,000. Each young adult is tasked with raising a minimum of $5,000 to help support their year of service. The ELCA commits to funding the additional $10,000 per volunteer through generous congregations and individual donors themselves. When more than $5,000 in gifts is raised by an individual YAGM, the additional funds will help support other young adult volunteers and programs, and the future of the Young Adults in Global Mission program.
