"And taking the five loaves and the two fish, [Jesus] looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd. And all ate and were filled. What was left over was gathered up, twelve baskets of broken pieces" (Luke 9:16-17).
As part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America's (ELCA) response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Living Stones Prison Congregation is partnering with ELCA World Hunger to raise funds for our feeding ministry through a Daily Bread Matching Grant.
Last January the Living Stones board launched a new program to support formerly incarcerated people (and their families) as they return to the outside community. Living Stones Fellowship was meant to be a monthly gathering at a local church in Tacoma. It would include a simple meal, an informal worship time, a sharing of community resources, and a time of fellowship. We were just barely starting this when COVID hit and brought our program to a screeching halt. Our in-person gathering was put on hold, with the hope of restarting after a couple of months. We're still in a holding pattern and are now reimagining how to walk with our friends as they reenter our community in the midst of a pandemic.
Our new vision is to do a monthly "drive by" pick up at the Tacoma church. We will now offer a bag of prepackaged food and drink, community resource information, a devotional, and COVID information. Your gift can help us connect with and support our friends.
We need your help to make sure we generate the maximum amount of support for these returning citizens during this difficult time. ELCA World Hunger is kickstarting our fundraiser with a $500 grant. With your help, we have raised over $1,100 to match the grant from ELCA World Hunger. We have until Sunday, November 22nd to continue to exceed our goal. Every gift truly makes a difference — thank you for your support!
